Alebrijes (ali-bre-haze) are carved out of copal wood and hand painted by the Zapotec natives in remote villages just outside of Oaxaca. These animal figures and magical wood carvings have captured the imagination of collectors and enthusiasts all over the world.
These brilliantly colored creations range from devils and dragons, to fish, turtles, snails, giraffes, gazelles, dogs, cats, rabbits, and chickens, to mention just a few. All wood carvings are one of a kind.


Rodrigo Melchor Ojeda was borne inthe town of San Martin Tilocjete in 1968. The art of wood carving and making alebrijes was passed down from father to son.

He uses his imagination to create bar scenes with devils, mystical creatures, and animals. He also creates angles, tigers, zebras, chickens and many more out of a local tree called "copal". more...
